Web Broadcasting - Live at Smalls Jazz Club - NYC

For those who like jazz, this is simply wonderful -

Smalls, a Jazz Club based in NYC (if you have been there before, you know that the Club has a great vibe), is broadcasting some of their concerts online, LIVE!

I was watching last night, and it was great... you can even stay online and have a wine while waiting confortably at home, between the sets while the crowd is chatting and having their beer at the club- it's just cool...

Tonight they're broadcasting the same fantastic group I was watching myself last night: Peter bernstein, Larry Goldings and Bill Stewart Trio. I woudn't miss it if I were you...

Is this virtual?

Even though being the kind of musician that still believing almost any real instrument ( acoustic) can be fully emulated virtually (well, I personally don't think they can), what Lyle and Alex did in this vídeo with these new virtual gears it's really amazing ( remember that Pat Metheny's video I've posted couple months ago?).

Amazonas Jazz Fest

It was really nice the hang at The Amazonas Jazz Fest in Manaus. I got to see some friends, have checked some nice places and good food, and all this while enjoying great hospitality and good weather... coudn't have asked for more. It was as a Duo with my friend Ulisses Rocha.
During the trip, I got some presents, like the newest Jimmy greene's - Mission Statement. He was playing with the Lewis Nash Quintet, and gave me this new one - the music sounds wonderful. Jimmy's a great guy, and used to hang out in Boston by the same time I was living there. Here's his Myspace page: Jimmy Greene MS

Endless Searching/ Taking chances

We all should tip our hats to this great artist... even if it should be for only one reason, and that reason being "to take chances" . But certainly he deserves it for much more. Pat is and will always be one of the greats, not just nowadays but of all time.

Europe fall 09'.

It's aways good to be back home!
What I can say is that Berlin is one of my favorite places in the world: wonderful vibe, sophistication, modern places and people, art,
wonderful crowd, what a fantastic city.
Skopje is a unusual, very facinating place ( as Cyprus as well), with warm people and wonderful food. Athens is a completely diferent history. Just to be there is 'breathtaking'... you feel to be exactly where everything was happening... it's just so hip.
We went back home happy but exausted. In fact, it was a intense trip in a sense of so many flights... in so little time!
But after all that... home sweet home.

Album of the week

WIDE ANGLES, by Michael Brecker.



A landmark album. Spetacular writing by both Brecker (as a composer) and Gil Goldstein ( arranger and co-producer).
Beautiful performances by the rhythm section (Adam Rogers on guitar, John Patitucci on bass and Antonio Sanchez on drums), by the horn and string players as well! A very different orchestration texture, kinda impressionistic and very powerful at the same time. Brecker is playing his horn ferociously, but in a lyrical way, as aways. In just a feel words - gorgeous.

Here's some of the stuff I've been checking out lately.
The Paris Big Band has such an incredible and tight horn section plus some beautiful arrangments/ compositions... is absolutely worth to listen to this guys!
I met Gabrielle Mirabassi two years ago, at this Jazz project we played in São Paulo... we became friends at that time and he gave me an album... such a lirical album. The trio sounds great with no drums.
John Williams is like one of those "you-must-listen-to" composers of our days... an amazing musical mind. This particular score "The Terminal" brings a Jazz flavor within ( it has to do with the history) that I enjoyed so much.
Back in 98', while living in Boston, I was checking out some cds at this store, and suddenly they start playing an album with a guitar player that knocked me out! I asked to the guy "who's playing??" It was Peter Bernstein, and the album was Whatever it takes, by Larry Goldings.
Shostakovich is one of the greats from Russia ( St. Petersburg)...I love this album. Another combination that can't go wrong: Nelson Freire and Villa Lobos.
Moonstone is one of my favorite albuns by Horta. The title track's version, with two guitars, him and Metheny, it's a classic. Paul Simon is a terrific songwriter... this album has all those classics and more, a Landmark. There's also a DVD with that Central Park Concert, wonderful... enjoy!

Again.... and again.

There's something about the following scenario: a beautiful voice surrounded by a good orchestra performing a gorgeous song, that simply makes me want to listen to it over and over and over... it can be either an Opera, a Broadway Song or a charming Bossa (it doesn't matter), that's the same feeling I have every time I watch certain movies (in that case, not just any movie, but some specific ones...I can think of a couple right now: Modern Times, Billy Elliot, Blade Runner, E.T., Lolita, Hable con Ella, Butch & Cassidy, The curious Case of Benjamin Button, Amarcord, Cinema Paradiso, The Lives Of Others... and so on). It just feels like seeing it again... and again...

These days I've been listening to some cool diferent things. One of the things that grabbed my attention was The Curious Case of Benjamin Button's beautiful soundtrack, by Alexandre Desplat. Mike Moreno (New York) happens to be a great composer, besides a wonderful guitar player.
Antonio Sanchez ( from Mexico) is one of my favorite drummers nowadays... his sound, musicality and fluency is just phenomenal.
Raphael is such a beautiful, spetacular guitarist... one of my all time favorites...
Me'shell has this deep groove coming out so naturally, it's so easy to start stepping the foot and want to dance listening to her. Michael Brecker's Pilgrimage is, for me, nothing less than one of the most impressive jazz masterpieces created in a long time. Talking about a pretty song, I just love to listen to Formigueiro, an old song written by Ivan Lins.
The Neil Cowley Trio can bring some interesting textures, it's kinda 'New York oriented', even though you can tell from the very first listening they're from London, by the way they play.
I've been listening to the noturnos and La Mer, by Debussy, since as I can remember, and I like very much this recording by the Cleveland Orchestra. So much music... so little time...

Yes or No

I remenber as if it was yesterday... the very first time I've listened to Branford Marsalis music.
I was 12 yers old at the time, and I bought an album, Random Abstract, where they've recorded Yes or No, by Wayne Shorter,and a beautiful version of I thought about you ( a truly homage to Ben Webster) with a great quartet: kenny Kirkland, Dilbert Felix and Lewis Nash. That completely blowed my mind away, and still doing it!! (Here's a version with Bob Hurst on bass and Jeff 'Tain' Watts on drums, for me one of the best Swingin´ Quartets ever!).
This interesting video is a clip taken from a fantastic documentary called Before the music dies, by Andrew Shapter and Joel Rasmussen.

Blindfolded listening

Hi there Folks,
This weekend I've been hearing to some interesting stuff on my Ipod while driving my car.
I must confess that in the past I use to be that kind of "against any blindfolded Ipod playlists" type of person, and that's a reason for that: I was afraid that it could happen that I fell in love with some music and, by the time I look to the screen searching for the artist's name... it's just saying: "track 4, unknown artist"; that's sad, and believe me, it happens more often than you think!
All my life I just love to seek the personnel information on any album... I mean; each player, arranger, songwriter, and so on.
Anyway, that fear vanished after I found out that: yes we can do it, to find out a certain artist "hidden" behind some lack of information!
Let's say: someone tells me about some album and I end up including it on my Ipod.
If for some reason I don't have the personnel information, or even the main artist from that album, I still can google that particular album, just having the tracks lengths... and problem solved, the rest you'll be able to find easily, Voilà!

A great song is always a great song.

A great song, no matter what, is always a great song. This is a classic example of that ( in a GOOD way), I particularly always loved this Woody Allen's version of this beautiful tune.
He's singing it as simple as you could sing, surronded by a gourgess and very sutil arrangment.

It's worthed to check the Keith Jarrett's version from the album The Melody At Night, With you, and Diana Krall's Version, from the album All for you, as well.

São Paulo traffic...

The only thing we can do about facing the São Paulo traffic (my dear hometown) showing some civilized manners is to charge your Ipod and enjoy some good music while driving, and relax...that's the best way out from getting nuts, garanteed!
